Customer Reviews:

Excellent Macro despite limitations5
I had a Canon 100mm f2.8 Macro and it was working quite well for me but I longed for a little more working distance. When Sigma came out with the 150mm f2.8 Macro, I tried researching it but couldn’t find much info because it was such a new lens, I found the MTF charts on the Sigma Website and it was amazing. This lens was very close to the performance of the Sigma 180mm macro and Canon’s famed 180mm f3.5 L. So I went ahead and bought it. It was a little pricy but I thought I could always return it if I didn’t like it.

My first impressions taking the lens out of the box was very positive. It was quite compact for the focal length and was very well made. It balanced quite well on my 20D. I never liked Sigma’s EX finish but I could live with it. The EX finish looks cheap to me,particularly the golden ring, and the EX badge, but it’s better than Sigma’s old design. The only thing I like about the EX finish is that it seems very durable. Even after heavy use there are no marks or scratches on the lens body and every time I wipe the lens body with a damp tissue, it just looks like brand new. The focus ring is nicely ribbed and wide but it didn’t have the kind of damping Canon L lenses have, so it felt a little loose. The tripod ring is made of the same material as the lens body itself, but it didn’t feel as smooth as the Canon’s L like the 70-200 2.8IS and the 300mm f4 IS. One advantage Sigma’s tripod rings have over Canon is you don’t have to take it off the tripod to remove the lens. You just pull a knob and the ring opens allowing you to remove the lens. This is good if you have it all set on the tripod and want to quickly remove it for some hand held shots.

As far as it’s optical performance is concerned, it’s an absolute gem. When I review the pictures from this lens, all worries and niggles about price, finish etc dissapear and I’m glad I own it. I compared it against Canon’s 135mm F2L which is one of Canon’s sharpest lens, and this lens compares very favourably against it. In fact it is just as sharp as the 135mm at comparable apertures. But the 135mm is a stop faster and has faster focussing but that’s a whole different story.

In short the lens is everything one can expect out of a macro. Excellent build, very sharp, good colors, excellent bokeh (out of focus areas). What else would one want? The focussing is slow, but it’s a macro lens and that’s how macro lenses are. The minimum aperture is 22 which may deter some, but I don’t shoot slower than 22 anyway because of diffraction limitations.

This lens is just perfect for it’s intended purpose. Needless to say, I sold my Canon 100mm in a jiffy.

Sigma gets an A on this one.5
I have the Nikon 60 Micro lens and wanted something with more working distance. In the Photozone.de test, it was amazing. Very high resolution, even at f/2.8. And very low CA’s(chromatic abberations). So I bought it and does it deliver that kind of performance? Yes it does! Sharpness and color redention was stunning. And at 1:1(life size on the negative or digital sensor), there’s more than 7 inches working distance. Build quality is excellent. It’s mostly metal construction. The focus ring has a nice dampened feel to it. The new Sigma rear caps fit tighter and do not come off. But they’re a little harder to mount. About autofocus performance, it’s fast, but hunted in low light with the Nikon D50 while shooting motocross. But that’s a weakness of the camera body, not the lens. On the F100(a high end Nikon film camera), it was lightning fast and dead on. Yes it is a full frame lens, so it can be used on 35mm cameras also. There’s a tripod collar and it makes for a well balanced setup when on a tripod. The collar is removable making it easier to do handheld shooting. The maximum aperture of f/2.8 allows more flexibility in low light. The filter thread is 72mm, and filters this big get expensive. It is a good all around telephoto-sports, portraits, landscapes…you name it. Just because it’s labeled a macro doesn’t mean a lens is good for macro only! It’s not cheap, but if you want a solid performer that’s great for all occasions, this just may what you’re looking for.

One of the best mid-tele macros4
Sigma’s EX line is the Sigma equivilant to Canon’s L series. These are Sigma’s top of the line lenses and the 150/2.8 Macro is no exception.

This is one of the finest mid-tele macro lenses out there. I’ve been able to get some incredibly sharp shots with this lens. The 2.8 aperture means you can do some low-light shooting and that you’ll blur out everything but your subject. Depending on how close your subject is and how good you are at focusing, you might blur out some of the subject at 2.8 as well.

This is a great lens for product photography to macro bug shots to mid-range tele subjects. Just don’t expect fast focusing. Using the focus limter switch helps for tele shots, but seems to make things slower in macro. (Normally, using the limiter should HELP when shooting macro!)

The pluses are: included case, strap and hood. The 2.8 and incredible sharpness. The focus limiter switch. And the very decent working distance.

The minuses are essentially slow focus and hunting when shooting macro. Some purists would suggest you should be using MF instead of AF for macro anyway and they have a point. My old eyes don’t see as well as they used to so AF is important to me.

In conclusion, if you’re looking to get a mid-length telephoto lens, especially for macro, you can hardly do better, particularly for the money. Sure, the Canon 180/3.5L will give you better color and contrast, but at nearly three times the money.

This is a great lens!

Customer Reviews:

Might prove to be a good product but service is questionable4
I purchased this camera in part because of the use of the OLED display ( which does add to battery life significantly), I took a number of close up photos using the flash and the flash lens blacken. I called for service and was give a return ticket number, I UPS’ed the camera to the only repair shop on the west coast. They received it three weeks ago and I have yet to receive a confirmed return date. Each time I inquire I am told I will be shipped a replacement camera. I have called three times and each time the “date” for replacement approval slides to within two days of when I call. The service tracking web site looks good but no info about the repair or replacement ever seems to get onto the web site.

Update, it is now one month since the Samsung repair dept. in Cal. received my camera. Still no definite data for repair or replacement. Getting very discouraged.

Now one month and a week after Samsung repair dept. received my camera and still no definitely word about when I can expect a replacement or repair. Many calls, many promises but no action.

I guess I’ll just have to write off the purchase of the camera to poor judgement on my part. Buyer beware still holds…………………

Surprise, Samsung clams to have ordered a replacement, only after 3 months of back and forth calls, e mails, etc. So I guess patience pays off? I still would be wary of Samsung service responsiveness.

Customer Reviews:

Sigma 2X EX DG APO Teleconverter for Nikon AF Cameras5
After reading the two reviews above, I was somewhat baffled. If you do any research on this product, you will find it clearly is made only for use with Sigma lenses, not Nikon lenses. The instruction manual that comes with the converter even lists which specific Sigma lenses to use. If you want a converter for Nikon lenses, buy the Nikon TC-20E (retails for more than twice the Sigma). Of course the quality of this product is poor when using a Nikon lens! I have a Sigma 70-200 zoom and it works beautifully; it is well worth the price.

Useful enhancement, within reason4
First, to set things straight: this TC is intended for only Canon cameras, and for Sigma lenses that mount on a Canon camera. Anything else, you’re taking your chances. Second, there are optical laws that invariably predict a 2-stop decrease in the amount of light hitting the sensor. And finally, glass, no matter which brand or how many exotic elements in it, has undesirable characteristics and you will always lose some amount of clarity, saturation and perceived quality (how much varies from lens to lens and eye to eye).

Now that those fundamentals are out of the way, the results and recommendations. I took several photos using this TC mounted on my Sigma 70-200/2.8 and my Sigma 150-500/5.6~6.3. I also attempted to mount my Canon 28-70/2.8L on it, but the fit did not work (it scrapes and sticks and will not lock into place), and thus I believe they are incompatible. I did not test it with my Sigma 10-20/4.5~5.6 for obvious reasons.

AF is maintained throughout the entire range of the 70-200/2.8, as advertised in Sigma’s compatibility chart. MF is engaged electronically for the entire range on the 150-500/5.6~6.3, again per the chart. AF through the 70-200 is solid, accurate, and has no degradation of speed. MF through the 150-500 @ 500 is, as one should understand, a touchy process, though it’s aided considerably by the optical stabilization function.

Image quality @ 500mm (really, 1000mm) is not spectacular (though what does one expect, given a maximum aperture of about f/12.9). I didn’t expect wonders but I had hopes of better. Some of this is inevitably due to my challenge in focusing, which is difficult without a split-prism finder. The image quality is still fairly bright and saturated, but somewhat noisy-looking. Exposure was accurate. I need to test on monochromatic surfaces to determine what’s going on with the noise.

Tripod-mounting the camera, lens and TC for the 1000mm (500mm doubled) test shots produced the best results, improving further with MLU enabled and use of an IR remote. Image quality @ 400mm (200mm doubled) is acceptable and this should be the recommended pairing of lens and teleconverter (70-200/2.8 with this TC). This pairing results in a decent-quality 400/5.6 for well below the price of Canon’s prime and zoom lenses in this range. I won’t claim that the image quality is better; just, it’s decent, and you save a lot of money.

Build quality of the TC is fine and nothing is worth further comment other than that it’s a solid, well-built TC with multicoated elements.

I wavered between a 3-star and 4-star rating. I have owned two other TCs, and they were unquestionably 1-star at best. I went with four for this one because of its good performance with the 70-200/2.8, maintaining AF with that lens, and having pleasing build quality (I have no concerns about taking it out and using it frequently). I am however disappointed about the performance with the 150-500/4.5~5.6. I would give it a 3-star for its performance with the 150-500. I think it should at least attempt AF, and if the user has to give up and set it to MF, fine. Here, we don’t even have that luxury, and there’s no explanation on Sigma’s website or the product literature. So, if you are considering this to get yourself a cheap 1000mm lens, be aware of the drawbacks (full-time MF, somewhat noisy images, and challenging focusing in even overcast light). If you’re wanting to extend a 70-200, this is the sweet-spot.

Very pleased4
I got this 2x converter to match the Sigma 70/200 2.8 lens. I have shot around 100 pics with this set up and have been very pleased with the results. I have shot wildlife to school track meets.
The only reason I couldn’t give this converter a perfect mark is I can’t use it with my other Nikon lens.

Amazon.com Product Description
The Sigma APO Teleconverter 2x EX DG for Pentax Digital SLR Cameras is a dedicated APO teleconverter that can be mounted between select lenses and the camera body to increase the focal length by the power of 2. The multi-layer coating reduces flare and ghosting, which is a common problem with digital cameras. The lens also offers maximum magnification without any variation in the minimum focusing distance. Compact and lightweight, this teleconverter can convert your lenses into longer focal-length lenses, so you don’t have to do a lot of unnecessary footwork. A case for the lens is included.

So Far So Good5
So far everything works well. I opened up the box and plugged in the camera. I then walked all the way around my house and it worked well. Yes there was a little fuz and static but nothing major. My main concerns were that my existing wireless devices would interfear. (Wireless internet, Wireless phones 6.0 Panasonic, and a wireless video transmiter 5.8) So far nothing seems to be interfearing with this camera. The picture quality is good and it seems to be well built.

I read the reviws for the other SVAT camera system that says you have to plug in the monitor behind the batteries and that it uses AAA Batteries. I thought I would try this camera because it has a rechargable batery and a base that you can set the monitor in while it charges.

I am very happy with my purchase. My expectations were really high but this thing does work well. So that is why I am taking the time to type this review so others can rest assured that this camera is,in my opnion a great deal.

Great in the beginning but now have major issues.2
I really wanted this system to work. I read all of the reviews and everything seemed great accept for the wireless range. After setting up the system (w/additions camera), all looked great. Setup was easy and directions were clear. The night viewing range was good and the reception range was better than I expected. Initially I was very happy, but after a few days of use I noticed issues with the picture. One camera showed a clear picture while the over was almost completely washed out and at night showed very blurry. And a day after rain or snow, both camera were fogged for a few days. No big deal I thought, I just have a defective camera(s). Unfortunately after replacing the one bad camera, the second camera was now washed out and barely visible. So I figure lets give it one last try and replace the second camera and LCD receiver. Again, same issues. Bad picture on one camera and perfect picture on the other. I finally gave up and returned everything to amazon. Now I’m back to square one.

Can’t hide outside!4
We bought this for one specific purpose. To see who is at the front door. Our porch is situated such that you can not see who is at the door from any window.

Our other Electronic Devices: Wireless Internet and Cordless Phones. No issues with the camera/monitor or our other devices. Both the wireless and phones are 5.8Mhz which may be the reason we had no issue.

Setup: I had the camera on a nail above the door in 5 minutes. Briefly skimmed the manual and we were off. We tested for a couple of weeks both in daylight and night to get the placement right. Note: If you are buying strictly for night vision…don’t. It doesn’t work more than a couple of feet. Our porch has a motion detection light in the ceiling so this works perfectly with the camera. We have tried the monitor sitting in the cradle, walking around the house and connected to the tv.

Results: On our first test, my wife loved it. She was able to clearly see who was knocking. The range is pretty small and it does degrade rapidly with walls and doors between. Our setup is basically 20 feet from the camera through the front door and outside wall. Moving to a back room with 2 inside walls produced quite a bit of interference…we could see but the image would flake out every few seconds. We also do not use the sound activation since the camera is outside it picks up any noise on the lowest settings…

For the price and ease of use…it fits our needs perfectly. It really depends on how you plan to use it, if it will work for you or not. If you need long range or strict night vision…this is definately not the system for you.

Customer Reviews:

A camera with excellent HD quality but not many features4
I bought this camera on Monday, had fun with it for two days, and then returned it. Although I can’t afford it, I then closed my eyes and ordered the HDR-CX550V. I basically went from the bottom of the Sony consumer class to the top in one fell swoop.

Things I liked about the CX150:
* FABULOUS quality in adequate light. The video in 24 Mbps mode is stunning. Search YouTube for examples. Every hair on my cat, dust particles in sunlight, it all shows up with beautiful resolution. It’s amazing. Almost Blu-Ray quality. You won’t find any consumer-class camcorder with better quality.
* 25x zoom , when used with a tripod, lets you get really close
* “macro” works without any special settings. Just put the lens an inch away and it will focus. Resolves fingerprints.
* Amazingly tiny. With no hard drive or tape drive, the unit is frighteningly small. You can put it and all the cables + charger in a camera case designed for a DSLR + telephoto
* PMB software works, has good basic editing. Used it to grab frames from movies – almost don’t need the “still” function if 1990×1080 res is good enough.
* It will take a 32GB memory stick, even though the feature list says they only support 16.
* The touch screen is responsive
* “touch the object” spot focus, spot white balance is cool
* Give it the NP-FV70 battery and it will record for hours and hours

Things I either did not like or features missing (by “missing” I realize that you have to pay more). Don’t mistake the length of my ‘cons’ list as hating the little guy – it’s a good camera for what it is designed to be.
* A bit pricey. I think it is worth about $450.00, not the $549.00 list
* No wide-angle. I wish Sony had made the lens go from slightly wide-angle to about 15x, instead of from normal to 25x.
* No external mic input
* No hot shoe – not even the Sony proprietary one
* Zoom motor noise is very audible in quiet settings – don’t expect to use this camera to record acoustic orchestral music in concert halls
* The “smooth slow-mo 240 fps” is NOT HD 1080i60 quality. Might be OK at 720, but I found it disappointingly blurry. I’d love to see it have the same capability as the Casio EX-FX1 (not holding breath)
* Not enough buttons – too much reliance on the touch screen. I prefer buttons to scrolling through menus. Sony could fix this by providing more than 6 “my menu” choices.
* Auto focus works good most of the time, but when it gets confused it is horrible. Combine that with no quick focus wheel and it is a recipe for loosing shots
* Picture mode is not available in 24 Mbps HD mode.
* The electronic stabilization does not work. I’ve grown used to optical stabilization in my DSC-H50 and there is no going back.
* Short of using something like the Black Rapid Straps Fasten-R2 screwed into the tripod shoe, there is no way to attach a neck strap. I almost dropped it several times.
* The plastic housing is sensitive to noise – any little touch while recording will show up as sound in the video.
* No windscreen for the mics. Combine that with no external mic capability and you won’t be able to hear anything in windy conditions.
* No remote
* No “night shot” infrared
* Low light performance is what you would expect from a small lens size. All the electronics in the world can’t fully compensate for glass area.

Summary: if you want a fairly cheap, tiny camera for shooting GREAT quality vids of vacations, the kids and the pets, this is an excellent choice. Want to do more, and you will need to pay more for a better unit. Just want to help other people avoid my experience of being a bit disappointed and having to trade up.

Awesome camera!5
The video quality is great! The touchscreen is very easy to use, the internal memory is great! This is a better buy than the HDR-CX110 which has no internal memory.
The camera is very small which I love, it fits perfectly in my pocket. It turns on when you open the screen and it turns off when you close the screen, very convenient.
The zoom works great and the steadyshot feature is very good and it really works.
If you set the camera to manual focus you can touch the subject on the screen that you want the camera to focus on, very cool.
Overall I love this camera because the video quality and of its size.

It is what it is3
I paid, after shipping, $489.99. For that price, this camera is worth it. It lacks certain features you would find on the more costly camcorders. There is no optical image stabilization, only steady-shot. No night shot, no external light, no remote… I can take about 2 hours of video on the highest setting. Battery life is about the same (2 hrs). The sound seems pretty decent, although, nothing to write home about. Video quality is average. Nothing amazing. Images arent quite as sharp as I’ve seen on higher-end Sony’s. I viewed files on my 46″ Sony LCD and the video quality wasn’t what I hoped for. It looks better on smaller screens. The videos were presented in 1080p only when played back through the camcorder. For just average consumers who are looking to play video that fills up their T.V. screens, and do it on a budget, this would probably be a suitable choice. If video quality is a major selling point for you, I don’t recommend camera. I guess what can you expect for $489.99?

!!!!!UPDATE!!!!!! 03/31/2010

After taking this camcorder outside on a beautiful spring day, I must say, in environments with good lighting (outside), the video quality appears to be a lot better. It definetly makes it worth the price. You WILL need a tripod or some form of mounting device to keep the image stable. This thing is lite, as I’ve stated previously. There is no weight to counter any jiddering or wobble your arm/hands makes when operating. I must say that I am overall pleased with this product. I still stand by everything I said before the update.

Outstanding optics, lousy case.5
I love these binoculars! Perfect clarity, close focus, and very good in low light situations. Light weight easy to focus. Saved 60 bucks at Amazon. The case is basically useless.
